Missing Overlay

Hi all,

I've been playing TF2 glitch-free via Crossover for several months now, but last week's update has caused a major problem: while in-game, my overlay (in case this isn't the correct word for it, I'm describing the areas along the bottom and in the upper-right corner) has disappeared, leaving blue or red shapes minus important information such as ammo, health, kills/deaths, and other map-related stats. Another problem is that the game's menu has a black screen for its background, but this is much less crucial.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? I know for a fact that it started immediately after my latest update, which was several weeks ago. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Adam

Try this: go into steam, open up the properties for TF2 and select Verify integrity of game cache under the Local files tab.

Thanks for the advice, Jeremy, but no luck...

I'm thinking this is a result of some graphics update, because the entire interface looks a lot less "sharp". In case it'll be helpful, I'm using the latest Macbook with the Nvidia 9400M.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Does it happen for every server you try to connect to?

i doubt this is the servers problem..
Your stats .. your everything that is displayed on your com..is most likely to be caused by the graphic card or something like that..

I have experienced this myself. Also as of a couple weeks ago - and still having problems. Are you playing via Steam? If so, does your game appear to be in a weird state? Mine says "Download paused" usually. This is new as of a couple weeks ago. Also, I noticed that when I launch the game, I get the Valve and Source splash screens when I didn't before. I also get the black screen with the menu and the missing HUD information. I have tried reinstalling everything (Steam, Crossover, and TF2) to no avail. It also seems painfully slow on occasion...(I am not sure how consistent this is - will have to try later when I am not at work :P)

I am on a MacBook Pro that runs NVIDIA 8600M.

It would be great if someone at Crossover could reproduce this - as I doubt we will get much support from Steam for this issue. If this doesn't get fixed, I won't have any further need for Crossover - I bought it just so I could play TF2. :(

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Lisa,

Yes, I've experienced absolutely everything you've described! I've been using Crossover for TF2 and a few other Valve games, and both the "download paused" notification, the Valve animation, and the slow responses have appeared within the last few weeks. I'm glad to hear that someone else is having these problems - hopefully, we can get an official response soon.

Did you notice this directly after an update? It's hard for me not to think the two are connected.

Thanks for the response!

Yay! We aren't alone. :)

I thought I would come back and document all of the differences I have seen - and they were all apparent at once after something changed. I honestly can't recall any details of an update that coincided (other than I do recall a Steam update).

Weird thing 1 - when I launch Steam, I now see a tiny window that appears in the upper left corner. The title of the window is "Wine Syste" (and then truncated because the window is too small). This didn't used to appear that I can recall.

Weird thing 2 - when I look at my game in Steam, its status is "Download paused". If I try to resume it, it says "Download starting..." but never comes out of that state (after hours of letting it sit).

Weird thing 3 - when I launch TF2 (by clicking Launch from the Games list), I get an "Updating Team Fortress 2" dialog box (with progress bar) that indicates "The Steam subscriber agreement has changed as of 11/8/2005..."

Weird thing 4 - after telling it to "Play Game" from that dialog box, I get the black screen with the TF2 menu.

Weird thing 5 - when I choose "create server" (simply because trying to play with others with the game this unplayable would be highly annoying), it goes into the normal splash screen while establishing the server. When presented with the introductory screens (to see movie, choose character), you can already tell the graphics are choppy. I also noticed some "white washing" of some areas of the screen when it is displaying the map itself. Gameplay is choppy enough to be unplayable and the are no HUD indications (other than boxes where the HUD info should be).

Hopefully, with all this information someone can help narrow down what is causing this, because the game is unplayable right now. Has anyone had any luck escalating issues with Steam when you are running via Crossover? (I am assuming that would result in fingerpointing back to Crossover) Because the Steam status seems awfully fishy as well.

Help! :)

Thanks!

Lisa

And I forgot to mention the displaying of the Valve and Source splash screens. Those weren't presented before.

That sounds like your launch options have been reset. The CrossOver bottle registry may have been corrupted. Try going into the properties for TF2 and setting the launch options to "-novid +mat_hdr_level 0". I believe that should be the default CrossOver settings.

I went into Steam and set the TF2 launch options there, but still no improvement. The only difference I noticed was that I don't see the Valve and Source splash screens anymore. The rest still happens. :(

Well, I don't know exactly what caused it, but I did a full re-install of Steam and then TF2, giving Steam its own bottle. And it seems to be working!

Ah, your bottle registry got corrupted. That explains why the launch options were reset.

Success! I took your advice, Lisa, and everything seems to be working perfectly.

Thanks so much!
