Steam woes!

I installed Steam a bit ago, and installed/played Peggle without any problems.

Not too long ago, around the time I installed KDE4, Steam stopped working. It still opens, but whenever I try to install a game or run an installed game, it simply closes without any message of any sort.

I've tried repairing, and removing and reinstalling, but with no effect. What should I do, oh great Codeweavers personell?

Important information:
Ubuntu 8.04
GeForce 8800GT
AMD 64 X2 6000+

I've heard about this problem before, but I have no idea what the reason is. When you tried to reinstall steam, did you try to reinstall it in a different bottle?

Also try to disable the in-game steam overlay in the Steam settings

Originally I had tried reinstalling it in the same bottle.

I just tried again, installing it in a new bottle (Windows XP).

Exact same result, except without any of the applications that I had installed (before the problem started) in the other bottle.

What did you mean, disabling the Steam overlay? I tried disabling the in-game Steam community, but to no effect. It still closes (with no errors or useful messages) as soon as I click on the Install button for any application.

I'm sorry I've been responding so slow. If someone can try to assist me, I will try to respond more quickly.

I am willing to install VNC (or something similar) if someone more leet than I would like to take a look at my machine directly.

This is not really my area of expertise, but here are some things to check:

Disable Compiz

My woes on Ubuntu 8.04 stopped after disabling compiz (you know the wobbly window effect etc).

There's an entry in tips and tricks about it. Otherwise:

"Hardy Heron comes with Compiz configured out of the box. You need to disable it.
This site contains details on how to disable compiz and how to setup a desktop icon to enable and disable compiz on the fly.

Hmm... I tried that, and it looks like metacity was already enabled (instead of compiz) in my conf files. I ran metacity --replace anyway, just to be sure, but the problem persists. When I click on the Install option in the context menu that appears when I right click on a game, Steam just closes. Frustrating!
