Can't start the activity editor/route editor

I've run into another problem with MSTS. Along with the actual simulator, MSTS also provide a set of stand alone tools and editor for creating your own activities and routes. You can clearly see the Editors & Tools being available in this window:

http://rapidshare.com/files/410583997/MSTS.tiff

But when I double-click on Train Simulator Editors & Tools Crossover just gives me the standard startup-screen for the simulator itself (http://rapidshare.com/files/410584408/MSTS2.tiff) There is no mention of the editors and when I click Play Train Simulator, the sim itself starts...

Anybody has any idea how to solve this?

Hi,

Seems rapidshare doesn't like .tiff files?....(wouldn't surprise me)...
tried to download them but all I got was html/xml garbage...

Do you have emulated virtual desktop enabled? A report over at winehq
suggested this was a needed thing...

Cheers!

Hi Don,

changed the screens to JPG. Maybe rapidshare will like those better.

First screen: http://rapidshare.com/files/410599877/MSTS.jpg
Second screen: http://rapidshare.com/files/410600030/MSTS2.jpg

I tried the Emulate virtual desktop-option, but did not make any difference.

Jpegs work ;)... but yes, I see the problem...I take it no menu entries
are created seperately for the editor/tool apps?...(control panel, then
launch 'edit menus'.....if not....

...the next thing to checkout is whether they are stand alone executables.
If they are that, you can use the 'Run' command to launch one of the stand
alone tools and see if they work like that...if they do, you can create
shortcuts with the same 'Run' dialog....

...if not.....we'll need dig a little deeper...

Cheers!

Nope, no seperate menu entries for the editor/tools.

In the meantime, I also mentionned this on the trainsim.com board. There someone just told me that these editors are indeed part of one and the same .exe file as the simulator itself. (train.exe) I guess that's why CXG gives me the exact same menu isn't it?

Hmm...okay....if they're all combined into the one exe, then there must be
some way to invoke the other functionality....ie; some commandline switch.
If this is the case, then it's possible CX didn't get things right...the
next trick will be to find out exactly what windows is doing to access the
embedded tools etc in the main exe....if you can nail that down, we may be
able to configure/create menus to the same ends...keep me posted...

Cheers!

Solved it! 😊 Some additional searching on the trainsim.com boards got me the flags that are used with the main exe file.

So, to get the editors started in CXG:

Go to the Program-menu, choose Run Command..., select the right bottle

At the command box, type in:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\train.exe" -toolset

That should get it working. First time you'll get an license agreement window.

For easy access you can use the 'Save Command to Programs Menu' button. That way you won't have to run the command manually every time.

...\o/....

Well done and happy shunting!

You know....this info you post here, plus the other info about tsunpack.exe
should really be rolled into a nice little tip&trick for this app....however
you would need to become an advocate for this app to do that - perhaps you
might consider this?

Glad you got it sorted in the end!

Cheers!

Hi, sorry to bring up an old thread, but I too am having problems with MSTS. When I click Play Train Simulator, it looks like it's starting up but then it goes to a black screen and I have to force shutdown the game. It doesn't give me any error messages or anything. Sometimes it will show the MSTS load up page but then will go straight to a black screen. Anyone know what causes this?

Nevermind I got it.

OK another problem. When I load the program you said for -toolset, it says "Failed to load gui_font <IDS_FONT_2>". Please help fix?
