Access 2000 Annoyances
  1. copy/paste in memo fields: text distribution loses all paragraph markers, it just runs all the text together in one big glob. ditto for email headers that are in a table format. requires manual re-paragraphization to read any of the text.

  2. report text invisible or white by default: i have several reports i rely on, but in most cases, ~75-90% of the text doesn't show up at all under cx. i've tried changing fonts, font size, and font color to no avail. it isn't consistent either. all my reports follow the same basic formatting conventions for font selection and style, and some reports will display text in areas that others won't. headers for some reason render text more completely than the report body or the footer, but it isn't consistent no matter what section of the report it is.

  3. sidebar font is white on light gray background: i know i saw a bug report about this one and codeweavers has recognized this one as a bug. just makes it hard to read the sidebar (tables, queries, reports, etc.).

  4. rendering/resolution: choppy text rendering. have tried changing the graphic resolution from the default 96dpi, but all it seems to do is make a larger version of the same choppy rendering effect. i guess i don't expect full native application resolution, but i did expect better than this.

2 had some progress made in a special access 2000 cx v7.x build, but the code has apparently not been integrated into the main tree yet, as the current stable release still has the same problems since early cx v4.x builds.

2 in the original post appears to be solved starting w/ cx mac v8.0 alpha 1 - beta 2 so far. #4 in the original post is most likely due to win98 limitations. so the remaining minor annoyances i still see in access 2000 are as follows...

  1. copy/paste in memo fields: text distribution loses all paragraph markers, it just runs all the text together in one big glob. ditto for email headers that are in a table format. requires manual re-paragraphization to read any of the text.

  3. database window sections do not maintain sorting preferences between sessions, and occasionally do not maintain sorting preferences between access/viewing instances. not sure what the default sorting preference is, but it's not alpha order by object name, since i need to keep sorting the objects that way.

  4. pdf output from reports does not allow text extraction...appears to be a binary conversion anomaly of some sort. (see beta report 1983)

1, 3, 5, and 6 still present in cx v8.0b4 for mac.

added new tip for #1...scrub text using text soap http://www.unmarked.com/textsoap/.

New annoyance cropped up since upgrading to Snow Leopard (Mac OS X v10.6.1)...MS Access can no longer output to PDF using Adobe Acrobat 8. Attempted to install Windows version of Acrobat 8 into an XP bottle, and although the install completed, it completed with errors. Attempted to create a PDF using IE7 under Windows XP bottle, but it failed with the following error: "Could not access Acrobat's Web Capture facility. Acrobat may be busy or waiting for input." Attempted to install both MS Access 2000 and MS Access 2003 independently in Windows XP bottles along with Acrobat 8, and the Acrobat 8 installation rendered the previously working MS Access 2003 application useless with errors referencing "this application has not been configured for the current user". Some macro error problem.

Will have to downgrade to Leopard again, or maybe re-establish a VMWare Fusion virtual machine.

Is it possible to print to PDF using cups PDF from Access 2000 under Snow Leopard?

Nope. Not sure if it was 10.6 or 10.6.1 that broke it, but it no worky now.

See note from the CUPS-PDF Mac developer at http://www.codepoetry.net/2009/09/03/cupspdf_is_broken_in_snow_leopard.

downgraded to leopard, so at least i can create pdfs again, but still have the binary weirdness bug. attempted to setup a windows 98 se vm w/ access 2000 and acrobat 6...but acrobat 6 no worky even though windows 98 se is supposed to be a valid install option. prolly would have had to downgrade to leopard again anyway since the mac netware client we use is not snow leopard compatible yet.

1, 3, 5, and 6 still present in cx v9.0b2 for mac.

since v8.x, any operation that requires reading of queries has a delay of 2-3 minutes, sometimes longer, depending on the size and/or complexity of the query involved. in particular, this is noticeable when entering design mode for queries and reports.

1, 3, 5, and 6 still present in cxo v9.0 for mac.

Bug 6178 and Ticket 787297.

1, 3, 5, and 6 still present in cxo v9.0.1beta for mac.

lag for entering into design view for queries and reports has mostly been resolved. lag is still present for a few reports, so i'm trying to determine if it's related to a specific query or table. no lags for any queries under this version.

1 seems to have been resolved under cxo v9.2.

3 and 5 still present in cxo v9.2.

6 is unknown since the win98 printing system is not working at all...to printers or to files.

have been able to export reports to microsoft snapshot files, but not to pdf.

i'm happy to say cxo v10.x seems to have fixed a weird printing anomaly with the cups-pdf generated pdf files. checkboxes specifically would print in varying states of normal/bold/extra bold for no apparent reason, nor be triggered by any discernible attribute. now all checkboxes print normal, no bold, and certainly no extra bold. note this was a print/hard copy only issue. pdf's themselves looked perfectly fine, but resulting prints were kinda goofy looking.

so i'm not sure what has changed, but thanks for the fix code weavers.

i suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later, but now that ms access 2000 is no longer officially supported, i've either got to find a copy of ms access 2003 or finally try to port my access databases into filemaker. i've seen the medal rankings for ms access 2003, so that would seem like the easy way out, but i have never been pleased with an instance of ms access 2003 that i've installed under cxo myself. gave up on it quite awhile ago.

3 and 5 still present. new scrolling bug 10475 also cropped up. scrolling bug has improved during 12.1 beta cycle. no other regressions noted. still rating as bronze.
