LotR Crashing after 10/29 Update

New user here who just got through the mammoth download/install/patching process for LotR Online last night (following tips and tricks page procedures). Game worked fine for about 8 hours of play and I was pretty happy with the Crossover Games product until this morning when LotR ran a big update.

I ran the patching procedure again which fixed the initial client version error and let me back into the game, however it now proceeds to crash rather randomly from 30 seconds through about 10 minutes of play. Error message points to a wine error and suggests I contact codeweavers, hence this post.

Anyone else experiencing this?

And I was so close to pulling out my credit card to register Crossover Games too. ;)

John

EDIT: Mac OS 10.6.4 and Crossover 9.2

I was seeing crashing before, but nothing like this.

Also, loading screens are just grey/white grids now.

Yep, I get that grid on loading as well. Sometimes I will get 3 or 4 crashes in a row as soon as I enter the game...sigh. Bordering on unplayable.

The white grid (Holodeck? ;) ) is displayed when the promo artwork cannot. I get that on occasion.

Can't comment on the crashing. Patched and and play without issue. :/

I just tracked down the grid issue. Hopefully, Alan can do something to download the missing files. (As well as to update the initial "pregame_ad" splash screen.)

These grids are a "new" feature Turbine added to the client.

Following the Character selection screen and entering the game, a screen was added with a top and bottom border (and the loading bar) with the grey/white grid where a "rotating" image is inserted. Currently there are 10 different images to be inserted "advertising" various aspects of the game, from character classes to the store.

Since these "rotating" images are called "lotro_generic_teleport_screen_01.jpg" (through 10) one presumes they are used at multiple locations in the game.

:/

Is there some sort of logging functionality I can enable so I can see why it's crashing and bring that to the forum or use to file a Bug Report?

PyLotRO is reliant on the patch function within patchclient.dll if that doesn't fetch them then there is nothing I can do.

After bulling my way through multiple crashes and finishing the introductory chapter of the game, my crashes became more and more infrequent. By the time I was well into the Ered Luin area, the game seemed to be running just fine. My last session lasted more than several hours with no crashing whatsoever. The loading grid is still there but that's no gamebreaker in my book.

In the release notes for this update I read that the starting areas for both dwarves and elves had been radically redesigned so perhaps therein lies the cause of the errors - either in the coding or increased usage issues with a high volume of players checking it out. I was playing with an elf character.

Guess Codeweavers gets my money after all. :)

It's a thought. I know I did that. :) (and i like it... More background on Skorgrim! Not sure if I want to yet again do the tutorial levels with an elf! It gets repetitive after a few years )

Well, no sooner do I post this and try logging back into the game when boom, boom, boom. Same again. I dunno, is it the time of the day? Can any vets of the game out there (North American servers) tell me if this is just a peak performance kind of error? I'm on a roller coaster of joy and depression. :(

The only thing I can say for certain... Historically, many "popular" areas of the game suffer from lag. That is to say, places like Bree and 21st hall, where there are A LOT of toons running around do "lag-a-lot." The one thing which seemed to make a difference for that particular problem is "more main memory" and/or a better video card. I run with a 3 gig 2.16 Ghz 2007 iMac and only rarely have problems.

The most interesting thing I can add... Just before Halloween, I had my internal hard-drive freeze up. It was a 5400 RPM drive. I had it replaced with a 7200 RPM drive. OSX 10.6.0 was pre-installed on the drive. I updated the OS and restored everything else via Time-Machine. Then installed CXG and LOTRO using the C4P install. Since then, not only has everything (including LOTRO) been "zippier," but I have not had a single CXG crash!

The main thing I think I observe from this, besides the faster disk access times, is the fact that I now have zero "funny stuff" installed in the OS... i.e. old applications that I no longer used and may or may not have deleted completely. Similarly, HUGE files, like the LOTRO install are now virtually "unfragmented."

I realize this is a pretty drastic step, but as it "just happened to happen to me" the restoration and re-installation has made a big difference.
