Area Loading Issues

Hello All.

I wanted to bring up a problem I've been having recently. I've been running Guild Wars on Mac OS since CXG 7.0, I've seen my share of problems, and most of them have been solved (if not all) along the way with various updates.

Back in the day, I would have issues loading into certain areas. These areas would change at random, and it was very inconsistent. I rebuilt my Dat file (Guild Wars Data file) and the problems went away. Until now.

I upgraded to 10.6, and so I also wanted to upgrade to CXG8. With this update however, there are certain areas, and this time it's not random, always the same areas, and for me and several of my buddies with CXG8, that just will not load. I just as well assumed this was a Dat file problem, and rebuilt it again, but it made no difference.

Having done 2 updates, I DID have in mind that one of these could have been the culprit. A friend of mine found a forum showing how to get CXG7.2.2 to work on 10.6, so that was my first attempt. Lo and behold, it worked. No problem loading into any areas anymore. Or at least none that I've been able to find.

So my question then, what changed so significantly in 8 that would cause such a problem that was not present in 7, and how do I (assuming it's an issue with either my game install, CXG install, or general set up) fix it?

Example of Load issue: Leave EoTN, head to Battledepths portal just behind it, enter portal, loads to 100% (or 0 files remaining) and freezes there. I've gone again and again with the same problem. Went in 4 players, 2 on CXG8, 2 on Windows, both Windows guys loaded, Both CXG8 guys didn't. I switched to 722, and tried again. 2 Windows loaded, I loaded with 722, CXG8 guy didn't.

Help. :(

Just loaded up and entered Battledepths from Ice Cliff Chasms, using CXG 8 on Ubuntu, and it loaded up just fine for me. Mac-specific issue, perhaps?

Out of curiosity, what other zones have you noticed affected? And since you mention going from EotN rather than CTC, does it matter which entrance to a zone you use?

You know that's a good question. I was running 2 players to Rata, which is why I went through from Eotn. I'll try from CTC. That should tell me if it's Zone or Portal specific.

Good to know it works for you. I think that means it's more likely I'll find a solution, rather than need to wait for an update. :)

I just gave it a try from CTC. Still won't load. I've been waiting for it around 5min. now.
I need to step out for 20 min. or so, so what I'm going to do is actually leave it trying to load for fun, and see if it comes in after a longer while.

So it would appear it's not portal related, but zone related, for the moment at least.

One of the more significant changes with CrossOver Games 8 is that more advanced shaders are supported without GLSL. It should also be the case that GLSL works better than it used to. For both of those reasons, I suggest that you go into regedit and navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\gw.exe\Direct3D]. There, set useGLSL to enabled and try entering the problem zone.

If that key doesn't exist, or isn't set to disabled, then you might create it and experiment with both values, "disabled" and "enabled", to see if one works better than the other.

Aaaah. That sounded like it would solve it. I was hopeful.

The Reg Key already existed, it was set to disabled.
Tried it without changing the value, still could not Zone.
Changed it to enabled, still could not Zone.
Deleted the key (why not right?), still could not Zone.
Recreated the key, and put it to disabled (as it was originally), Still could not Zone.

Alas, the problem persists. :(

I have also been having this problem. So far the only place that this occurs for me is when entering the mission "A Gate Too Far" in EotN. I tried repeatedly enabling GLSL and disabling it again. I also tried deleting it and then re adding it in both enabled and disabled but to no avail. Right now I am trying to download 7.2.2 and see how that works.

Well, downgrading to 7.2.2 seems to have fixed that problem as well as a number of graphics glitches. By the way, I am running CXG 7.2.2 under Mac OS 10.5.8

Hi,
Can you post a list of areas that does not load, and if possible describe a way to get to one of them with a newly created character? The name of a quest that gives access to one of those areas should be enough, I can work my way through the Guild Wars Wiki then.

We have all 3 guild wars expansions, but we don't have well-developed characters, since that would require a mayor amount of playtime, and after all our main job is to code, not play. So we don't have access to many areas yet.

Both Battledepths and A Gate Too Far are in the EotN expansion. To get there, you need a level 10 character, at which point you can take What Lies Beneath from Len Caldoron in Lion's Arch, I Feel the Earth Move Under Cantha's Feet from Minister of Maintenance Raiugyon in Kaineng Center, or Hole of Istan from Bendah in Kamadan. Any of the three will take you to Boreal Station, and you'll automatically get Against the Destroyers in your questlog. Following that will bring you to the Eye of the North outpost. Leaving Eye of the North outpost and heading almost straight west and a little south will get you to Battledepths.

For A Gate Too Far, follow Northern Allies (which you should pick up from Jora as part of Against the Destroyers) to Sifhalla, do Curse of the Nornbear, ask Sif about Olaf Olafson and make your way to Olafstead, where you need to do some stuff with Olaf before he'll send you into A Gate Too Far.

On a sidenote, I'm still thinking this is a Mac-specific issue, as both zones load perfectly fine for me (CXG 8, Ubuntu Jaunty)

I can repro this. CXG8, Mac OS 10.6.1, MacBook Pro (Mid-2009).

I've tried on various graphics settings and none of them seem to work. If you'd like for me to get debug files of some sort, just let me know what to do and I'll be happy to; getting to Battledepths can be a pain for a brand new character (as you do have to be at least level 10 first.)

Okay, so after playing for a couple days with CXG 7.2.2, I am randomly crashing when entering Battledepths and every time when entering the mission Destruction's Depths. The graphical glitches (seen in other threads) don't seem to be apparent at all under 7.2.2 as they were under 8.0. I'm using a Macbook Pro Build 9L31a under OS 10.5.8. If you tell me how to do a debug report I'd be glad to post one.

Just wanted to note that I can reproduce this bug. Apparently its a stack overflow, most likely caused by an endless recursion. I'll investigate this deeper tomorrow.

The bug doesn't happen in my current development code, so its quite possible that it works in the nightlies as well. I don't know for sure though. Its quite possible that one of our hacks breaks it.

Just want to say ... love the coders at CodeWeavers! I too am having the same problem.

The quest attempting: Norther Allies -- to the battle depths, like the others and forgotten relics. It just wont load and stays there. I originally thought of giving it enough time but after 5 min I knew it is something else.

Is there a work around I can try?

Jac

Unfortunately, the only workaround I've found is to revert to 7.2.2 until the guys get a fix in place. I actually tried a fresh install of 8.0 on 10.5.8, moving the various CWXO data files out of the way. Sure enough, Battledepths crashed.

Bizarre that it's only certain areas that crash, and only on certain platforms*, but that's the way it is.

  • Do we have a semi-definitive list of what platforms GW + CWXO Games works and doesn't work on?

My platform is MacBook Pro 17" (late 08/early 09 model) plus 10.5.8.

If you want to use 7.2.2 for GW and 8.0 for everything else, you can fire up 7.2.2 and use the Programs menu to launch GW. CWXO might complain about updating data files each time you open it, but I didn't see other nasty side effects when I tested this option. Since GW is my primary use for CWXO, I just removed 8.0 for now.

BTW Stefan - If it helps, I'm happy to pull down a dev build and try it on my box and report back. Just point me at the right place.

I basically only run GW and have a full backup, so risk of damage is minimal.

I'm having a problem getting into Fronis Irontoe's Lair. It let me load all of the files, but once it gets to 100% it never opens. How do I fix that? I see people have gone to an earlier version of Codeweavers, but I don't know how to do that.

Not sure if its the same problem as I was able to load Frontis Irontoe's Lair with Crossover Games 8.0 but if its on Mac, just grab the older version of Crossover Games from your downloads page. I think its in the Archived section.

Drag the application and overwrite your other Crossover Games file.

If you're on OSX 10.6 you'll need to hack it with these instructions:

thank you i'll see if that works. i'm not really good with computers.....at all. so we'll see if i can do this. weird thing is I can get into irontoe's lair on an older character, but a character i just made the other day, I can't get in. it's the strangest thing.

No worries, if you have problems just post what you've done and where you're at and I'm sure someone will help out.

I found the cause of the bug - its a OSX driver bug workaround that causes a crash when loading bumpmap textures in some games. The crash should not occur on Linux since the bad workaround(used to fix overbright faces in HL2) is only enabled on drivers that support GL_APPLE_client_storage.

So does this mean there will be a fix soon? I am finding the bug to be a problem in completing EOTN but I do always have something to do on GW. Just curious cuz I would love to finish the dungeons.

Apparently this remains an issue. I am running the current version of CxG (9.2) and the game still hangs consistently for me when loading Vloxen Excavations, The cutscene "An Audience with the King" in the Battledepths, and approaching the end of the quest "Warband of Brothers." It consistently drops in the same places, and this means that I cannot complete the EoTN campaign with any of my characters.

The problem was also persistent in CxG 9.1, I haven't tried downgrading to 7.2.2 but will do so tomorrow.
