New advocate

Hello, folks, I'm the new advocate for Band In A Box, hopefully to run under Crossover Office.

I'm a big Linux fan and a big Band In A Box fan, as a musician. I have a perfectly good PC wasted running Windows just so I can run Band In A Box, and it's criminal.

So far, my experience is what I've seen noted before; if you take Crossover Office and then install BIAB without making any setup effort at all, it installs and runs, but it does not believe it has a midi channel to send its output to, and that's important. I believe there is hope in this, since configuring the wine midi mapper to use one of the fine linux midi programs should be very do-able. For this reason, I'm not posting a rating yet - I don't classify this as being known not to work, because some minimal setup may be all we need. More later.

I have ranked Band In A Box at Bronze Medal status, since it's usable but limited by the lack of a way (so far) to have its midi output played other than writing a midi file and then going out to linux to play the file. After checking various forums, I have not yet found a generally usable way to get midi going, yet.

However, I have a bit more testing depth. I installed Fedora Core 3 and then the most recent Crossover Office beta, and Band In A Box 12 operates significantly better there than it did before on the same system with SuSE. The menu bar at the top functions correctly, which was not the case before.

I've been able to get BIAB 2005 to work under wine but not CXOffice. I'm running timidity -iA& as the midi server, then use the wine midimapper device as the output driver. I had to compile the sound drivers directly into the kernel for timidity to be able to use them though.
I'm going to uninstall from CXOffice and try to re-install BIAB again.

Your posting concerning Band In A Box is now more than a year old, and I am wondering whether there have been developments in the area of getting midi mapper to work.

I have installed Band In A Box on my Suse 10.0 system, wine is the latest version (20060303), and also cxoffice (20050830) but I cannot get any sound from it. It keeps complaining that there are no Midi Drivers installed. Any hints would be wonderful!

Thanks a lot,

Wolfgang

I just installed BIAB and it runs, but I'm having the same MIDI problem. I checked the tips and tricks section, but cannot find the config file mentioned. Is there some other way to fix this?

I'm unning Crossover standard 5.0.
