Poker BOSS media IPN Solution

Following a software upgrade, on 25/5/2010, I found that "poker.co.uk" would no longer work. It would launch, then freeze, then crash, and only give this as a result:
image

(The blurry effect is me moving it about with the mouse)

After much googling, IRCing tearing of hair and gnashing of teeth, an upgrade from 8.0.0 to 9.0.1, (which caused its own issues) and a complete re-install, I eventually found this. I guess this is old news to many crossover users, but there seems to be so little info out there on how to tweak recalcitrant apps into life it is worth sharing..
Menu>Crossover>manage bottles(wait to intialise)>select bottle with problems>Control Panel>Wine configuration>launch selected item>graphics>emulate a virtual desktop> choose a size smaller than or equal to your screen>apply

I was using Poker.Co.uk, but this problem will effect the following poker sites, on the IPN, which all use the same software: (note to mods, "Paradise Poker" is by far the most widely used of these, with Virgin probably next, if you must hide this post under a specific forum)

BOSS software stores hand histories locally, but will not display them under crossover, I am not techy enough to find out why exactly, something to do with paths being absolute in the softs, and not relative, I guess (??).
However, if you place a book mark in your favourite browser, pointing to THIS file, you can one click view them there..
Mine is here,
file:///home/stephen/.cxoffice/Poker.co.uk/drive_c/users/crossover/Local%20Settings/Application%20Data/Boss%20Media/Poker.co.uk/history/1786999/history.html

but yours will be BottleName>drive_c/users/crossover/Local Settings/Application Data/Boss Media/(pokersite)/history/(somenumber)/history.html
HTH, ;)

Hi,

I think the program was holding a pair of deuces and Wine called it's bluff!!! 8)

...seriously though, are any of these games available in any free/demo version so I
can shuffle the pack here to see what I can discover? If I have to login/register to
grab a demo...I won't -- I'm too damn lazy for that....but I am prepared to stick an
example in the blender here and debug/triage it for you - that, I don't mind doing
at all 8) If you can provide me with an easy, free URL link to grab a demo, I will
attempt to discover what they've actually changed to cause this...

Cheers!

Hi, and thank-you for your quick response and kind offer..
Poker apps are not like games with a "demo mode".
If you go to:
http://www.poker.co.uk/download.html
You can downloaded the installer, after install, it will ask you to set up a money account, just ignore that part, you can then play with "play" or "practice" money for test porpoises..
As I say above, I have found a kludgey workaround with the virtual desktop, it is far from ideal, but it works. I DO have another poker software, which still refuses to work at all with my new 9.0.1 xover, even with virtual desktop enabled and all msxml's installed, I was going to submit a ticket for this one, but would be very grateful if you could spare the time and have a tinker with it, here is the address for the download:
http://www.cdpoker.com/
This is also a "skin" or badged version of software used by many different poker sites,
image

so if you find a solution it may well be of interest to many people!
I will hang out in the IRC room if you need to contact me immediate, and will monitor this thread
Thanks again :)

Hi again,

Thanks for the info ... I'll have a play over the next few hours
and see what I discover...(I'll look at them both)..

...btw, I'll be testing against linux, so best you mention what setup
you're running this on there :)....

...I'll post back to this thread a little later....

Cheers!

TY Don, was just looking at my "profile" and wondering whether to fill it..
Here is my box:
openSuse 11.2/KDE 4.4.3/2.6.31.12-0.1-default/nVidia 6150SE (IGP)/173.14.25/AMD Sempron3400(1800Mhz),2Gb DDR2 RAM,

Poker.co.uk -- CXG-9.0.1

This was a bit of a closed misere but here's what seems to consistently work here...

  1. create a new winxp bottle

  2. install the following packages from the builtin CXO installation targets

    InternetExplorer 7
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 redistributable
    Microsoft DirectX Runtime - Modern
    Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

  3. Highlight the bottle you're working on -> Control Panel -> Wine Configuration -> Launch Selected Item

  4. In the wine configuration GUI that appears (winecfg) -> Graphics tab -> Emulate a virtual desktop ON -- Desktop Size 1024x768 -> Apply --> OK

  5. Now install the poker-co-uk client -- do not launch the client at the end of installation, just exit and let crossover finish the installation.

  6. Next, while still in this setup mode, start the client, login to your account, then exit the client again (seems to handle it better like this first up)

  7. Download the following registry file --> http://rapidshare.com/files/394021327/direct3d.reg.html

  8. Open this file in a plaintext editor, the bottom-most line will read "VideoMemorySize"="512" ---change the value (512) to suit your vidoecard ram amount.
    After you edit this file (if needed)...save the file to your HOME directory

  9. Highlight the bottle you're working on -> Run Command -->> in the Command: stringbox enter the following;

    regedit ~/direct3d.reg

    Click on Run, and then close this window once it's finished.

  10. Highlight the bottle you're working on -> Control Panel -> Wine Configuration -> Launch Selected Item

  11. In the wine configuration GUI that appears (winecfg) -> Graphics tab -> set the following;

    Allow the window manager to decorate the windows OFF
    Allow the window manager to control the windows OFF
    Emulate a virtual desktop OFF
    Vertex Shader Support: None
    Allow Pixel Shader (if supported by hardware) OFF

    Now click Apply => OK

...(pant pant)...-now- try launching the poker-co-uk client again!

I'm not terribly sure how your IGP based nvidia graphics will handle this, but the above
worked a treat here...give it a go and let me know how you get on. (I'm supposing the above
outlay may work equally so for other like-clients, but you'll have to sus that one out yourself 8)

...I'll get to the other title in a wee while, I kind of want to hear how the
above pans-out for your particular setup first....

Cheers!

WOW!! thank-you so much for sharing your expertise like this,
I am playing a tournament at the moment, but I will try the above asap and report back, Thanks again
:)

Hi Dan, I am following your instructions now...
I am a bit confused as to what value to put in the regedit file..
here is lspci -v -s for my video:

stephen@home:~> su -c 'lspci -v -s 00:0d.0'
Password:
00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

        Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 23
        Memory at de000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
        Memory at c0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
        Memory at dd000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
        [virtual] Expansion ROM at dffc0000 [disabled] [size=128K]

        Capabilities: [50] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
        Kernel driver in use: nvidia

Which of the memory values should I use?

Hi,

Looks like you have 256mb of volatile, so the line would read;

"VideoMemorySize"="256"

Cheers!

TY!

Hmmm....I just noticed something in the debuglog for cdpoker that caught
my eye -- I happened to have wine-1.1.33 setup at the moment, so I let
it have at it....it worked! Currently I have about 10 flavors of wine
installed -- I'm not going to tango with them all for cdpoker's sake
(seeing as it seems to work in 1.1.33)...but I haven't had a go at the
newer wine-1.2rcx yet, so I'll grab that source and build it up and
see if cdpoker is still seemingly happy there....

Hmmm I thought you had it cracked there, but a good trial of the poker.co.uk install revealed some major glitchery :(

Tables and windows opened are "always on top" and are across all my desktops (I use KDE, and have four desktops, one reserved for poker, the others for email, browser etc etc. Like this, the poker table is on top off all other apps on all desks..
The "bug & workaround" I mentioned in one of my posts, re viewing hand histories is still present, ie in a game, menu bottom left, select live help, select Hand history, this should call and open IE with the history.html file showing, but it "hangs" and the non-responsive IE window cannot be closed.
and most problematic, when a table is closed remotely (fewer players) the new one opens OK, but a greyed out vestige of the old remains persistently, and cannot be closed
This last also happens if you sit at a table and leave it yourself, the table greys out, and remains stuck.

No prob....I've just had a cursory look at the other title (cdpoker) and it's a tad
more problematic (although I can see what's causing it to crash in debug) -- whether
or not I can figure a way around it's issues is another matter .... but I've seen
enough already to say "getting cdpoker to run under CX will take a bit more time" 8)

Cheers!

Hmm....ok...thanks for the feedback on usage, it helps track down stuff
like this with software I am totally unfamiliar with...

...I had another look at it with the above in mind ; I was trying to
get it to behave in a winxp bottle/IE7 -- it's a lot easier working
'back in time' (a lot of my previous attempt was just trying to avoid
the crashing business)...it's a bit friendlier back at win2000 profile...

  1. create a new bottle, win2000 profile

  2. install IE6 and Microsoft Directx Runtime - (legacy) into the same bottle

  3. Highlight the bottle you're working on -> Control Panel -> Wine Configuration -> Launch Selected Item

  4. In the wine configuration GUI that appears (winecfg) -> Graphics tab -> set the following;

    Allow the window manager to decorate the windows OFF
    Allow the window manager to control the windows ON
    Emulate a virtual desktop OFF
    Vertex Shader Support: None
    Allow Pixel Shader (if supported by hardware) OFF

    Now click Apply => OK

  5. Now install poker.co.uk ..... it should nearly work 'as expected' like this.

Setup like this, it doesn't actually call to iexplore.exe to show the hand history ;
instead it throws to my system web-browser, which is more or less analogous in
effect (this is what it does in winxp-sp3 in vmware too...it throws to the system
browser, IE ) ...

...if you get any graphics glitches/artifacts, that'll most likely be the IGP
video setup you have - we might be able to tweak that, but I'd first suggest setting
up a win2000 based bottle as per above, and then letting me know how it behaves...

Cheers!

Just FYI, cdpoker seemingly works correctly in wine-1.2-rc2

Thanks again Don, I will do more work on it later and report back here.
One small thing... could you point to to some info...
When I launch "manage bottles" I get the gui and wait for the bottles to initialise, an empty virtual desktop opens, titled "Default - wine Desktop"
The bottle I have checked "use as default" does not use a wine virtual desktop. In fact the only one that does is a poker.co.uk one I created the other day...

You know, cxsetup (Manage Bottles) does a very similar thing here, but I
haven't as yet looked into why it's carrying on like this. I suppose it
hasn't really annoyed me enough yet to be bothered tracking down that
behavior, as it doesn't seem to break anything. I understand your confusion
here though - the 'default wine desktop' doesn't actually have any namesake
link back to which bottle crossover 'uses as default' -- the two uses of the
word 'default' here are coincidental and don't specifically relate to each
other in terms of usage AFAICT....

Cheers!

Ok Don, ty for putting my mind at rest, if I uncheck the only bottle which has "use virtual desktop", it does not do it...
Anyway, using the win2000 bottle has some of the same glitches as before, viz:
Closing a table greys the table but freezes it. I can now "crash" that table alone and leave the program running,
The hand history now works perfect, it calls a new tab in my default browser, firefox, which is great..
The program now opens on one of my desks only which is also great.
More questions, which I am sure are documented elsewhere, but I find the Crossover site impenetrable, and don't know which parts of WineHQ faq apply to Xover and vice-versa..
What is the best way to launch an app from within a specific bottle? Do I use run command from manage bottles?
(As you know, I now have multiple bottles with Poker.co.uk, but each new one overwrites the existing desktop icon, so to launch an older install, I "run command" or should I launch from CLI?)
Is there a way to get a debug log, so I can get more info about the tables freezing when closing them?

Okidoki...we edge ever closer here....

...I don't have an IGP based motherboard of that chipset to test
against...but I have had a look at what might work for you (that
doesn't seem to break anything here)...

...the file I had you download above - open it in a plaintext editor...

Change the line that reads ;

"DirectDrawRenderer"="gdi"

..to be...

"DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl"

...in the same file, change the line that reads;

"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"

...to be ....

"OffscreenRenderingMode"="pbuffer"

....or....

"OffscreenRenderingMode"="backbuffer"

I would try these options one at a time ; you'll have to experiment a little
to see what (if any) combination works. I doubt a debug log of this would
disclose anything (I think it relates to how the IGP chipsets handle their
buffer cache). Here, I think opengl + pbuffer was looking sane...but let me
know what these setting do, there maybe more we can poke at. Just edit the
file accordingly, then save it....load it with regedit as per previous tip
(it'll just overwrite the registry with the new values)

Regarding multiple (bottle) instances of the same app as you describe (this below
assumes you have crossover installed in your homedir);

  1. create your first bottle as per above and check it works as expected - let's say this bottle's name is Poker

  2. start cxsetup (manage bottles) -> highlight the Poker bottle -> click Add Duplicate

  3. the next window that appears will give you the option to rename the duplicate bottle -- call it Poker2 -> OK

  4. in KDE desktop, rightclick to add a new link to application

  5. do whatever you desire here (icon, name, etc)..the important bit is the commandline specification;

~/cxoffice/bin/wine --bottle Poker2 --workdir ~/.cxoffice/Poker2/drive_c/"Program Files"/Poker.co.uk ~/.cxoffice/Poker2/drive_c/"Program Files"/Poker.co.uk/poker.exe

  1. give the link (icon) you're creating a different name (the bottle you already have installed will have created a
    shortcut called 'Poker.co.uk' ... call it anything but this), give it an icon image if you like...finish off this process...

That should give you 2 instances of the same app each in a different bottle and it's own launcher...let me know how this goes..

Cheers!

...I do actually play cards every 2nd Sunday for the local Euchre/FiveHundred club,
but we play for anything but money (and I'm well hated for my Misere calls 8)...

...cobbling together your mention of Paradise Poker being very popular, and taking
your IRC comment into consideration (about bundling client+CX...which may or may not
happen in real life), then the next best thing is bundling CX with a c4p recipe for
things like this...ie; in effect, folks can download (trial or buy) CX and it comes
all ready to install these card_game clients 'automatically' so to speak...

To this end, I've just put together a c4p recipe for Paradise Poker...see;

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=1233

You would need to become an advocate for that title (and ask Aric for access to the
C4P Editor) to be able to access/edit the recipe, so I've uploaded the c4p here;

http://rapidshare.com/files/394691823/1233.c4p.html

It's only rudimentary but stands as a good example of how do c4p recipes for so related
'differently skinned' clients. Also, it occurred to me whilst doing this, that the inclusion
of IE6 maybe overkill here (seeing as we're using the -system- web browser to do that work)
and in all fact may not be needed at all -- but I've left it in there for now just in case.
I've also dropped the installation of the directx runtime dependency as I couldn't discern
and real need/performance difference by including it. The c4p sets up all the winecfg stuff
as well, but does not address issues like the case of having an IGP video chipset -- once
I know what actually works in that respect, I could add those specifics to the c4p file as
well...(c4p is really groovy for stuff like this 8)...

Paradise Poker itself is in one of those gray categories -- it's classified as a 'game' and
therefore fodder for CXG, but I reckon just as many folks running CXO may want to use these
sorts of 'games' as well (I'm currently deliberating that point with the Ninjas wrt apps that
could be fodder for both CXO & CXG). The 1233.c4p file will work for both CXO & CXG in it's
current trim, however it will behave differently due to differences in the builtin crossover.c4p
that's part of CXO (as opposed to what's part of the CXG builtin crossover.c4p)...ergo;

Using CXO -- it will install IE6
Using CXG -- it will not install IE6 (no builtin target)

None-the-less, it works just fine in either CXO or CXG...and allows for the premise of you saying
(in a forum perhaps) that if people want to play such a thing on Mac/linux, all they have to do is
download CX...

Cheers!

I will try again, but my connection is super speedy usually, (I lol'ed at the IE6 estimate of 1h 36min @28.8 takes mine about 20 secs, those were the days eh?)

Many many things, Don.
I wonder whether this thread/discussion should not be moved or diverted, as now it is under the head "BOSS media IPN solution", and many people will not be reading your valuable tweaks and advice, also we are discussing stuff not specifically related to that particular software. I wish that the crossover forums had a more general discussion area so that things learnt when tackling one specific problem were more generally shared. I have learned lots from this thread alone, even basic stuff, and I am sure that there are loads of people out there who could apply or adapt your suggestions to their own particular problems and then share that with others.
For instance, the little regedit hack/file, I would NEVER have been able to come up with anything like it (ps it did not quite work as instructed, I launched regedit from the bottle and "imported" it)
This would be useful to 1,000s of users with many different apps........

Hi,

I do agree with your observations/sentiments here, but I must obviate the
case that this -thread- is actually already in the "CodeWeavers General Forums" ;)

That said, if you feel the thread deserves a different subject line and/or should
be move to another place in the forums, let me know...(I can ping the Ninjas with
the idea and see what they think)...

Yes, going the regedit ->Import registry route is the other option...works the
same, but I must check what I advised here...(it should work as I describe, but
perhaps I've boofled the path...ie; might need full/path/to/regfile and not ~/ )

The regedit hack (and it really is that) is something commonly splattered about in
the forums -- however the c4p system can, most of the time, be used to achieve the
same ends -- I did posit the notion some time ago that perhaps those reg keys should
be defaultly included in the crossover bottle makeup ; I'm not sure where that little
discussion ended up...but seeing as c4p can easily do it the notion may have fizzled out...

Those things are documented over at wineHQ btw...but I'll give this some thought and
perhaps come up with some documentation suitable for inclusion in the C4 support library
area...something for me to think about for the future anyhow...(and will ultimately
depend on what the Ninjas think about such)...

...I'll check the other thread in due course....

Cheers!
