Is anyone else having trouble with steam games w/ Snow Leopard?

I'm having all kinds of problems -

Half Life 2 crashes
Left4Dead Crashes
etc.
etc.
I only ran guild wars for a little bit and it seemed to work but I don't think it's graphically as intensive as L4D or possibly even HL2...

Are you using CXG8?

Yes

Right-o.

I'm a Linux user so the SL doesn't affect me, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't that easy fix.

All I can suggest is mentioning it in the Beta Centre, as if it's something to do with CXG itself they'll probably want to know fairly quickly.

Yeah, originally I was going to post there, and I had posted there in the past, but then considering that they had made RC1 available to anyone for download, I figured I'd post here since not everyone might have access to the beta forums (I'm not sure if they are restricted or not)

I'm suspecting the bottle at this moment, I just played doom3 in another bottle - normally I can't play doom3 for more then 10 minutes, 15 max per pass before it crashes (known issue with the game) and I was able to play without problems for almost an hour (just exited the game normally a moment ago) so I think I'm gonna recreate the bottle for my steam and see what happens.

Gotta be worth a shot.

Looks like there was a problem with the bottle. Not sure what or why, but everything is working now, including I no longer have graphical glitches in Sacred Gold.

I don't know if it was something I had done or installed - or if the bottle became corrupted through an upgrade or what. Oh well, just glad it works now :)

If you're an advocate and have access to the beta center, please file a beta report. Its certainly alarming if Snow Leopard breaks these games(they do work for us).

If you're using the non-games CrossOver 8, this behavior is expected. There were a few opengl regressions in Snow Leopard, we have workarounds for them in CrossOver Games 8. These regressions were a part of the reason why cxgames 8 is delayed.

You can download the current cxgames 8 release candidate here:

I guess you missed my last post - it was the bottle itself that was broken - I don't know if it was in one of the upgrades from 7.2.0 to 7.2.2 to 8.0.0b1 to 8.0.0r1 that did it, or something else installed in the bottle that broke it, or some registry tweak (although I don't remember making any in that particular bottle) that broke it. But, a fresh bottle and transferring my steam folder into it everything works fine again.

Installing into a fresh bottle is certainly a good way to eliminate a source of potential problems. For those wishing to avoid that hassle, here are some alternative possibilities appropriate to CrossOver Games 8.

Use the Registry Editor (run "regedit" in the Run Command dialog) to check for no-longer useful keys. Under either [HKCU\Software\Wine\Direct3D] or [HKCU\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\<something.exe>\Direct3D], check for:

  • OffscreenRenderingMode: your best bet here is to remove this key. The default value is now "fbo" which will almost certainly give you the best results (so, you can also explicitly set it to "fbo", if you prefer).

  • useGLSL: if you remove this, CrossOver Games 8 will pick based on your graphics chip's capabilities. Stefan has greatly enhanced what CrossOver Games can do without GLSL, so it shouldn't be necessary on nearly as many GPUs. GLSL can introduce some problems (performance, incorrect rendering, excessive memory use leading to crashes), so it's definitely worth experimenting with disabling it. If you leave the key in, the values you can try are "enabled", "disabled", or "auto".

Under the key [HKCU\Software\Valve\Source\<game>] you will find recorded settings for your Source-engine games. You might consider deleting these keys and letting each such game guess its settings from scratch. Since CrossOver Games 8 has better capabilities, the games are likely to default to higher DirectX level and other settings. Though if you do this, you will have to reestablish your preferred settings for windowed or full-screen mode and resolution.

If you get crashes after a period of playing certain games, try turning down the texture detail level. We are still struggling with the problem of games running out of memory, although there have been many improvements in this area. Highly detailed textures use a lot of memory.

Check that you don't have no-longer-helpful launch options for your Steam games. In particular, previous versions of CrossOver added "+mat_hdr_level 0" to many Source-engine games, and that's no longer necessary. This one shouldn't cause problems, but will prevent HDR from working those games. You might remove other similar settings if you aren't sure they're still necessary. (For several games, "-novid" is still necessary, unfortunately.)
